This matters because inconsistent backpressure produces inconsistent melt quality: variable melt temperature, variable melt density, and — in the molded part — variable weight, dimensions, and mechanical properties. The alarm is typically noticed when part weights begin drifting or when the process capability (CpK) for a critical dimension falls below acceptable limits even though no hard alarm is tripping the machine.
Root causes in order of likelihood: (1) Worn or contaminated hydraulic proportional valve controlling backpressure — the valve spool is sticking or the pilot pressure is fluctuating. Clean or replace the valve. (2) Inconsistent material feed — the material is bridging in the hopper throat, causing the screw to alternately starve and flood. Check the hopper level sensor, material dryer delivery consistency, and throat cooling. (3) Non-return valve wear — a leaking check ring causes irregular screw recovery because some material leaks backward during injection and must be re-plasticized. (4) Screw or barrel wear — a worn screw allows material to recirculate in the barrel, degrading melt quality and causing inconsistent backpressure response.

Troubleshooting Protocol

Not indefinitely. MC66 is an early warning. Today your parts look fine; next month your CpK values will have degraded below 1.33 and you will be producing out-of-spec parts without knowing which ones. MC66 means your melt quality is inconsistent — even if the inconsistency is currently within the part tolerance, it is trending in the wrong direction. Diagnose and fix the root cause before it affects product quality.
How do I verify if the backpressure hydraulic valve is causing MC66?
Swap the backpressure proportional valve with an identical valve from another machine (or a spare). If the MC66 alarm moves with the valve, the valve is the cause. If the alarm stays with the original machine, the problem is elsewhere (material feed, screw wear, or check ring). This valve-swap test is fast and definitive — do it before anything else.
