PEEK 450G is the unfilled, general-purpose grade of PEEK using Victrex's standard molecular weight. It is the benchmark against which all other PEEK grades are measured, and is the preferred grade for medical implant (long-term implantable per ISO 10993, USP Class VI, FDA Master File), pharmaceutical processing, and food contact applications where carbon fiber or glass fiber additives are undesirable (particle shedding, surface roughness on sealing faces, or regulatory restrictions). The '450' denotes medium-viscosity optimized for injection molding; 'G' denotes general-purpose powder/granulate form.
PEEK 450G is processed at 360-400°C melt temperature with 160-200°C mold temperature. The semicrystalline microstructure after proper processing (approximately 30-35% crystallinity) provides the characteristic balance of strength, stiffness, chemical resistance, and wear resistance. Inadequate mold temperature (<150°C) quenches the polymer into a predominantly amorphous state — transparent amber color, lower strength, poor chemical resistance, and recrystallization in service causing dimensional change up to 1.2% (linear) as the part cycles above Tg (143°C). Correctly processed PEEK 450G is opaque beige/tan — the opacity comes from spherulitic crystalline structures scattering light.
